The HBO series ‘Band of Brothers’ reintroduced the world to the taste and quality of Vat 69 whiskey, pulling it up from relative obscurity to noteworthy status again in the American markets. Even Richard Nixon had an affinity for this blend of scotch, along with the horror-crazed character in the infamous Stephan King novel ‘The Shining’. Vat 69 is the collaboration of William Sanderson and Son. In 1882, he offered a tasting of his scotch created by barreling 100 varying blends. The overall winner of this innovation was cask No. 69 – thus Vat 69 was born. On opening a bottle, the first breath is a nose of lemon, flower fields, and vanilla frosted apples along with bright sultana and caramel drops. The palate of Vat 69 Blended whiskey is imbued with waves of vanilla spice, sweetly sugared butter apples, lemon and tannin with hits of spring oak and summer wildflowers. Perhaps Jack Torrance simply craved another glass in of Vat 69 in “The Shining”, and all would have been remedied had he just been allowed one more sip?
