Priding itself as one of the only self-sustaining, bio-fuel distilleries in Australia, Belgrove Distillery of Kempton, Tasmania is owned and operated by Peter Bignell. After a bumper crop of rye back in 2008, Bignell decided to build a custom-made, 500-liter copper pot still and refine his own rye whisky. Bignel's farm, home, distilling facility and still are all heated with biofuel, a highly innovative technology that is much safer for the environment. Belgrove Distillery uses 100% rye from Bignell's land and is one of the very few distillers in the world that can boast of growing all its own grains, malts, ferments in-house, as well as distilling and barrel-aging its whiskies on site. Belgrove Distillery offers several iterations of whisky including Belgrove Rye Whisky, Belgrove Black Rye Coffee Liqueur, and Wholly Sh*t Rye Whisky - smoked using home-grown sheep dung (yes, dung!). For a step in the 'greener' direction when looking to enjoy your next perfect dram, try Belgrove Distillery Whisky!
