Founded by Spanish native Andres Brugal Montaner in 1888 after he relocated to the Dominican Republic from Santiago de Cuba, Ron Brugal is a brand of select rums produced by Brugal & Co. of Puerto Plata. Before moving from Cuba, Don Andres studied the art of rum-making and used this knowledge to develop his first dark rum recipe. By 1920, the brand had its first warehouses for aging rum in oak barrels and by 1976, had launched a line of premium rum. Despite 60% of the brand being sold in 2008 to a Scottish distilling company known as The Edrington Group, Brugal is still operated by a descendent of the Brugal family and has continued to produce a legacy of prized rum, liquor, and liqueur varietals, including; Carta Dorada, Extra Viejo, and Brugal Leyenda – a premium edition double-aged rum released in 2015 in tribute to the company’s founder, Don Andres himself.
