Monkey Shoulder is a true Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. That means it’s the product of multiple single malt scotches. In this case, it’s from their 2 neighboring Speyside distilleries. That means it includes whisky from Kininvie, Balvenie, and Glenfiddich, all of which are owned by William Grant & Sons.
Kininvie Distillery is the creator of Monkey Shoulder. The distillery itself has only been open since 1990, but they’ve partnered with others in a few really wonderful creations. Normally their whisky is used in blends like Clan MacGregor.
Traditional malt whisky making process, malted barley is turned by hand by malt men using large heavy malt shovels. Years ago, some malt men would develop a strain injury which had a tendency to cause their arm to hang down a bit like a monkey's, so they nicknamed it 'monkey shoulder'. Thankfully, the condition no longer exists but we're still proud to honour our whisky heritage.
