Founded by Charles Mackenlay in 1815 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Mackinlay's - otherwise known as Mackinlay & Co Ltd at the time - started producing in the 1860s. By 1907, the brand was highly favored throughout the country, so much so that 25 cases were famously selected to accompany Lord Ernest Shackleton as the official Scotch whisky for his adventures in Antarctica. In 2007, several bottles of Mackinlay's Rare Old Highland malt were discovered buried under the snow and ice at Shackleton's Antarctic base camp! Charles Mackinlay & Co was family-owned up until 1961 when the brand changed hands several times until finally becoming part of the Whyte & Mackay portfolio in 1993. Using the bottles discovered in the ice in 2007, Whyte & Mackay had the distillate analyzed and recreated with the help of whisky blending expert Richard Paterson - resulting in two limited-edition and exceptionally rare iterations, the Journey (1st edition) and the Discovery (2nd edition) Mackinlay's Shackleton Rare Old Highland Malt Whisky. Today, this legacy brand is most readily recognized under the name Mackinlay's Shackleton Whisky (in honor of Lord Shackleton) and offers several selections of superior Scotch - each proudly representing the heritage of adventure and exploration housed in every bottle.
